If you have a renovation project in mind, you will want everything to go as smoothly as possible.

However, there are some common mistakes that can hinder your project…

Most of this comes down to how well you plan for the work. Being prepared is often the best way to prevent issues and ensure your renovation goes forward without hiccups.

A part of being prepared is knowing what not to do, which is why we’ve compiled a list of the most common mistakes so you can avoid them.

1. Not Having A Clear Renovation Vision

Your vision is what drives your renovation. Without this, you are likely going to end up with a house that isn’t what you wanted.

Only you know what your dream house looks like and your renovation should reflect this.

Think about your ‘Must Have’ features and your ‘Wish List’ features. As well as a great way to stick to budget, this can really make you think about what you actually need from your renovation versus things that would be nice to have.

Additionally, thinking about your lifestyle, your future and what you really want to achieve with your renovation can be hugely beneficial. Are you a growing family? Do you love to entertain? Do you value having lots of green space?

Your lifestyle should determine what you change, keep or add in your home, so it’s important to think carefully about what you will most benefit from.

2. Going For The Cheapest Builder

Let’s face it; renovations are expensive.

However, cutting costs by going with the cheapest builder you can find is not going to benefit you or your wallet.

Often, the cost of the contractor reflects the quality of their work. Using the cheapest builder will only cost you more down the line when you inevitably have to get builders back to fix the things that weren’t done properly to begin with.

Shopping around, reading reviews and ensuring your builder is someone you can trust is going to save you time, money and stress.

3. Ignoring Existing Issues

Particularly with older houses, it is likely that when you start your renovation you are going to find some issues.

Whether these are things that aren’t up to code, rotting wood or issues with the electrics or plumbing, it’s going to be costly in the long run if you ignore these problems.

While it may be an extra expense, the longer you leave these problems, the worse (and more expensive) they will get.

4. Not Communicating With Your Team

Your builder, designer and any other contractors you employ are the backbone of your project.

The quality of your renovation depends on them being in the loop and communicating with you every step of the way.

If you’ve got a good team on your side, they’ll know how important this is and communication throughout the renovation process will be a breeze…
