Queenslander homes are loved for their rustic charm, wraparound verandas and tropical lifestyle. But, there is a common drawback: they tend to be poor at regulating temperature.

If you’re familiar with Queenslander homes, you’ll know they can be sticky during summer, and a bit cold when Brisbane’s westerly winds blow through in winter.

The good news is there are some simple things you can do to help reduce the impacts of the changing seasons on your home.

In this post, we’re sharing our thoughts on how to keep your Queenslander home warm and comfortable this winter.

Insulation

  • Roof Insulation: Install high-quality insulation in the roof space to prevent heat loss, as Queenslander homes often have high ceilings and vented roofs that can let heat escape.
  • Wall Insulation: Consider adding insulation to the walls if they are accessible. This can significantly reduce heat loss and improve indoor comfort.

Windows and Doors

  • Double Glazing: Replace single-pane windows with double-glazed ones to improve thermal insulation and reduce heat loss.
  • Weather Stripping: Seal gaps around windows and doors with weather stripping to prevent cold drafts from entering the home.
  • Curtains and Blinds: Use heavy, insulated curtains or blinds to retain heat during the night and keep the home warmer.

Flooring

  • Underfloor Insulation: Insulate under the floorboards to reduce heat loss, especially since Queenslanders are often raised off the ground.
  • Rugs and Carpets: Use rugs or install carpets in living areas to add an extra layer of insulation and provide a warmer surface underfoot.

Heating Systems

  • Efficient Heating: Install energy-efficient heating systems such as reverse cycle air conditioners, gas heaters, or wood-burning stoves. Ensure they are appropriately sized for the space.
  • Ceiling Fans: Use ceiling fans in reverse mode to push warm air down from the ceiling, enhancing the effectiveness of your heating system.

Ventilation

  • Controlled Ventilation: Install vents with dampers to control the amount of cold air entering the house, especially in spaces like the kitchen and bathroom where ventilation is essential.

Draft Proofing

  • Seal Gaps: Check for and seal any gaps or cracks in the exterior walls, around windows, doors, and skirting boards to prevent cold air infiltration.

External Features

  • Outdoor Structures: Consider adding verandah enclosures or outdoor blinds to create a buffer zone against the cold and reduce wind chill around the house.
  • Landscaping: Plant trees and shrubs strategically to act as windbreaks and reduce the impact of cold winds on the house.

Maintenance

  • Roof and Gutters: Ensure the roof and gutters are in good condition to prevent leaks and water damage that can compromise insulation and warmth.
  • Chimney Maintenance: If you have a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned to ensure it operates efficiently and safely.

Interior Adjustments

  • Area Heating: Focus on heating the most frequently used areas of the home to save energy, using space heaters where necessary.
  • Warm Décor: Add warm décor elements like throws, cushions, and thermal blankets to create a cosy atmosphere.
