Are you looking for a luxury kitchen makeover for your Brisbane home? A well-designed kitchen can make all the difference in functionality and aesthetic appeal which is why choosing the right layout is so important.
When renovating your kitchen, there are many things to consider. A kitchen doesn’t have to simply look nice, it also has to be a functional and practical space. This is why the layout of your kitchen is so important.
In this blog, we’re sharing our top tips on how to choose the right layout for your kitchen.
Eliminate wasted steps
When designing your kitchen, think about what tasks you perform most frequently and where. You’ll save yourself a lot of time and energy by placing items needed to complete a task close together. For example, consider placing cabinetry close to the dishwasher so that you can easily unload the dishwasher.
Design wide walkways
Ensure your layout allows enough space between the island and cabinetry for you to easily move through the space. As a general rule, paths in kitchens should be at least 90cm wide. Aisles within the cooking zone should be 100cm wide for a one-cook kitchen and 120cm wide for a two-cook configuration. Take this into consideration when planning your layout. For example, we love building spacious kitchens like the one above. This was in one of our recent renovation projects for our clients in Murrumba Downs, Queensland.
Reduce traffic
Your kitchen is probably going to be a high-traffic area, especially if you have kids. But there are ways you can reduce the traffic and the clutter. For example, you can create a space before the kitchen, known as a mudroom, for people to leave their shoes, hats, backpacks, letters etc. in the kitchen itself, make sure that the primary pathway is hazard-free.
Place the sink first
When creating a kitchen layout, many designers place the sink first and then work from there. Think about placing the sink where there is a window, and where it’s not too far from your appliances. The island can be a good location for the sink.
Find the right location for your island
The kitchen island can be where much of the food preparation happens. If your kitchen layout will include one, consider its location carefully. Make sure that it will not block the area in front of your major appliances, such as your oven, dishwasher, and fridge. Allow enough space for your appliances to open, without placing the island too far away. For example, we love the island bench in this kitchen that we created for our clients in Greenslopes, Brisbane (see above). During this renovation project, we created a sunny and spacious kitchen for their family to enjoy.
