Is renovating your kitchen one of your 2023 goals to update your home? If so, you may be wondering how much it will cost.

There is no simple answer to this question. The cost of your kitchen renovation is influenced by many different factors, meaning it’s hard to provide one answer for all projects. However, there is some evidence for what an “average” kitchen renovation costs.

According to the annual HIA Kitchens and Bathrooms survey, a kitchen renovation should cost around $22,000 to $40,000.

The final cost can’t really be predicted until the kitchen is measured and you have decided on materials, finishes, inclusions, and appliances.

What influences the cost?

When planning your kitchen renovation, there are a few things you need to consider. Ask yourself these questions to get a better idea of how much your project will cost.

Budget, mid-range, or high-end?

The first step to determining the price of your kitchen reno is to decide on its scope and size.

  • Small kitchens generally cost around $10,000 – $15,000, and can include custom-made cabinetry and a stone benchtop.
  • Mid-range kitchens cost around $15,000 – $30,000 and offer more scope in materials and finishes.
  • High-end kitchens start from $30,000 and can go over $50,000, depending on how much you want to spend. They offer you the most scope in terms of materials, design, and creativity.

Flat Pack or Custom Made?

Next, you’ll need to decide whether you want your new kitchen to be flat-packed or custom made. Although flat-packed may seem cheaper, it requires you to have advanced DIY skills and the ability to manage the project yourself. A custom made kitchen is more expensive, but will be made to precisely fit your space, and will be installed by professionals, giving you a higher-level of workmanship. Working with builders is also much less stressful than doing it yourself and can result in a more satisfying project.

How much work is involved?

Then, you’ll need to think about how complex your project is going to be, and how much work will be required. A typical kitchen renovation may require input from an electrician, a plumber or gas fitter, a tiler, a plasterer, a carpenter and a painter. Basically, the more tradesmen you need to employ, the more it’s going to cost.
