If you’re looking for more space or better views, raising your house can be a great way to achieve both, whilst also increasing the value of your home.

Renovating your home and raising it up can be expensive, so it’s worth thinking about whether it’s the right option for you. In this post, we’re exploring some of the benefits of house raising renovations, as well as an example from our recent project!

Creates more space

Raising your home up a storey creates a whole new level of space, on the same size block. You can turn it into additional rooms, garages or workshop spaces. Raising your home also means that you wouldn’t have to encroach on your backyard space with an extension. You could still have room for a pool, outdoor entertaining area, or a place for the kids to play.

Increases flood resistance

Let’s face it, Brisbane is known for its floods. Raising your home, particularly in suburbs close to the Brisbane River, can improve its resistance to floods. For example, if your house is up on stilts, then it will be less likely to get flood damaged.

Restrengthens foundations

As homes age, they may face issues with the stumps becoming weak and posing a safety risk. Stumps can get termites, start rotting or have water issues. Raising your home allows for restumping to take place, strengthening the foundations and realigning the house. This also means your home is better able to withstand the Queensland climate conditions.

Improves the view

Raising your house may get you better views of the cityscape or river in Brisbane’s hilly suburbs. Or, you may be able to find some green space. Plus, once you raise your house, you may be able to watch the sunset.

Adds value

Since raising your home creates more living space and better views, it also adds value to your property. Spacious homes and large yards appeal more strongly to buyers. On a more personal level, raising your home is well worth the investment because it will make your home more comfortable and enjoyable to for your family live in.

House Raising Case Study

This modest, post war home in Coorparoo, Brisbane, has been completely transformed into the owner’s dream house!

With their vision in mind, we took this quaint, single storey 3-bedroom house and turned it into a modern 2 storey 4-bedroom home with an open living area and ample storage. The best part about giving this house the facelift it deserved was being able to maintain the character of the house by keeping the original features like the windows, timber floors and cladding.

By raising the home to build underneath, we were able to make the most of the block so the owners would have ample space and storage. Most importantly, we were able to preserve the backyard space and even add a pool.
