How A House Extension Revitalised this Post-War Home

The Brief

This classic post-war home in Greenslopes, Brisbane, was in need of some TLC. It was outdated, cluttered, and too cramped for the family to comfortably live in.

The homeowners approached Aussie Building Design and JM Homes to see how we could help. After meeting with the clients to discuss their vision and requirements, we got to work with our trades and suppliers to bring their vision to life and create the home of  their family’s dreams. The renovation and extension took this small post-war home and revitalised it to better meet the family’s needs in the modern era.

Project Timeframe

This project took three months to complete, commencing in June and finishing in September 2020. It cost between $200,000 – $240,000.

Since it was a historical home, we first had to get it assessed for asbestos. We engaged Advanced Deconstruction to complete asbestos testing and removal.

Once the asbestos was removed, we were able to start work. We added a rear extension to this family home, giving them over 55m2 of extra space. To create a seamless finish, we matched and continued the timber flooring into the new space. The kitchen was moved from the middle of the house into the new extension. The project ran smoothly, with no real surprises. We did experience some issues with supply chain delays for materials and appliances, as many people did in 2020, but we were able to still finish on time.

Project Outcomes

This post-war home has been totally transformed into a modern, spacious, and open home. We breathed new life into the living, and bathroom spaces.

We created a new kitchen, dining and an outdoor dining area so that the family can easily entertain guests and make the most of Brisbane’s warm weather.

JM Homes were patient with us during the quoting phase, communicated with us throughout construction, finished on time, had very few variations and accommodated our minor changes where requested. We would definitely use JM Homes again.”
